Scarlett Lewis founded the nonprofit Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement after her son was murdered during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012.  After his death, Scarlett became part of the solution to the issues that we’re seeing in our society—and that also caused the tragedy. She created the Movement and became an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development that teaches children how to manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy relationships. Speaking across the US and internationally to diverse audiences, Scarlett urges everyone to become part of the solution.

Scarlett created the Choose Love for Schools Program, a no-cost, comprehensive, lifespan, next generation SEL and character development program that teaches children and adults how to thoughtfully respond with love in any situation, handle adversity, and have courageous conversations by using the Choose Love Formula of: Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion-in-Action = Choosing Love. Choose Love has been extended into homes, communities, athletics, and the workplace. The programs have been accessed in all 50 states and 100 countries, reaching more than 1.9 million children. Learn more at and join the Movement to help make the world a more loving, and peaceful place.

Shannon is the Governor-appointed Program Director of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement for the state of New Hampshire. Her role involves outreach and presentations across the state, increasing awareness of the Choose Love Program to schools, parents, communities, police departments, EMS, universities, youth groups, pediatric medical offices, hospitals, various organizations, DHHS/DCYF, Department of Safety, the Attorney General’s office, Department of Corrections and other state agencies. Shannon is part of NH’s School Safety Preparedness Task Force and leads the SEL implementation recommendation. She is responsible for growing the outreach of the Choose Love Program even further for the safety and well-being of NH’s citizens, measuring the implementation of the program, and serving to increase connections between people and agencies across the state.

Shreya is the Chief of Staff & Content for the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement. She started off working on the Movement’s social media and has slowly grown her position to include, graphic design, website updates, managing content, and more. One of the best parts of her job is getting to work with Shannon Desilets, our Director of Advocacy, to support the growing team of Choose Love Ambassadors around the world and seeing the impact of their hard work.

Shreya attended Western Connecticut State University and graduated from the Kathwari Honors Program with a BBA in MIS and a minor in Accounting, Finance, and Philosophy. She loves being able to bring creativity to the table and work with the most incredible team of inspiring, caring, and loving people she’s ever known. She looks forward to seeing Choose Love in every school. home, and community around the world.

Julia Richter has a BA in Elementary Education and Minor in Dance. She received her Masters Degree; “Integrating the Arts in Education” from Lesley University and taught arts based programming in inner city schools to help cultivate strong, authentic relationships and build levels of trust, integrity, respect, and confidence. She became a certified Growth Coach through Lifeforming Leadership Coaching and received her certification in Mindfulness & Social Emotional Learning and Positive Intelligence.

Julia took her experiences of teaching, coaching and social emotional learning to create the “C.A.R.E.S.” Coaching Program for Schools. In “Cultivating Authentic Relationships in Education System,” Julia coaches creative strategies and social emotional well-being practices to unite and empower educators and school leaders in becoming the best versions of themselves, and to cultivate strong, healthy connections that will help build morale and positive, successful school cultures. Julia is ecstatic to join forces with the amazing Choose Love Movement to help our schools flourish to become the absolute best, safest, loving, nurturing, learning environments they can possibly be.

Marlene Kurban is a freelance grant writer who joined the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement in 2019. She assists with researching and applying for grants to support the Movement’s programs.

Previously Marlene worked in nonprofit management roles for over 25 years. She lives in Sarasota, Florida.

Daryn joined the Choose Love team in the Fall of 2021 when the organization was looking for another freelance graphic designer. “I jumped at the opportunity and after thanking Alexis was told that it was Jesse who chose me. That immediately touched and opened my life, mind and heart…just a little more,” Daryn says.

A news designer with Hearst Connecticut Media in 2012 when the Sandy Hook tragedy occurred—the local newspaper chain that had to cover it—Daryn says every little face and name became part of her while laying out those front pages. Staff knew some of the families, the community leaders — right in the thick of it.

Scarlett’s work in turning it into a positive inspires Daryn to bring the brand to the next level as it continues its critical mission and benefits around the world in continuous growth.

The future and early education of our children, especially revolving around good mental health, is an area Daryn is actively becoming more active in. Besides being blessed by working with the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement team, her work as a children’s book illustrator carries positive themes, hope and love to children. With degrees in graphic design and illustration, and partial concentration in psychology, Daryn’s extensive and successful career includes all of it.
