Navigating Healthy Compassionate Touch In Schools

Choose Love CARES Workshop

Recommended for Educators

Tuesday, September 6, 6:00-7:30 EST

Length: 90 min

Facilitator:  Kate Mackinnon

With the rise of mental health challenges amongst our youth, educators need effective solutions to create calmer classrooms and emotional resilience. Touch is as essential as nutrition to the development of a newborn baby. Research in neuroscience has proven that nurturing touch positively impacts brain development, mental health, and social behavior. Touch has become a popular topic of discussion since the pandemic. There is also much confusion and fear because of the harm that can be done with inappropriate touch. Healthy compassionate touch can be safely included within the daily routine of the classroom as a tool in supporting the regulation of the nervous system, along with many other benefits.

OUTCOMES:

-Learn the neuroscience of touch and its relationship to our emotional state

-Explore the research on how healthy compassionate touch increases

concentration, promotes resilience, and decreases unwanted behaviors.

-Discover practical ways to use touch within the daily activities of the classroom.

-Understand the importance of the basic ground rules of touch to provide safety

and respectful boundaries.

An author, speaker, and Alternative Healing Arts Practitioner specializing in CranioSacral Therapy, Kate Mackinnon has been using touch to support her client in restoring their well-being and in accessing their physical potential for the last 30 years. She’s passionate about providing the opportunity to help people create comfort and ease in their bodies. She holds diplomate certification in CranioSacral Therapy through the Upledger Institute and is a Certified Master Practitioner for Distance Energy Healing from the Core®.

As a licensed Physical Therapist in California and the UK, Kate Mackinnon brings many years of experience to her Collaborative Navigation of Your Health & Wellness practice as a Craniosacral Therapist and Certified Master Practitioner for Distance Energy Healing from the Core®. She first came across CranioSacral Therapy as a Physical Therapist in the UK, working for many years with children with disabilities. While she does not offer any physical therapy treatments or services in her current practice, she has deftly woven her extensive knowledge to inform her work as an Alternative Healing Arts Practitioner.

Kate uses her skills to support her clients of all ages through in-person work and through collaborative distance energy healing sessions. Utilizing CranioSacral Therapy, Kate can help people access their own self-healing mechanism. While it’s not possible to provide any guarantees, she has seen amazing results by using her hands in this subtle and profound technique. She explains this technique in her book titled “From my Hands and Heart: Achieving Health and Balance with CranioSacral Therapy” published through Hay House with a foreword written by Dr. Wayne Dyer, who was her client and the inspiration for this book.

Additionally, Kate has partnered with Scarlett Lewis to bring the conversation about healthy compassionate touch into schools when working with Social Emotional Learning. Kate has developed an extension program called Healthy Compassionate Touch that is part of the enrichment program for the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.

Kate has been using touch to support her clients in restoring their well-being and in accessing their true potential for the last 30 years.
Kate partnered with friend and colleague Robyn Scherr to support colleagues in the practical elements of running their bodywork practices through teaching online classes. Followed by writing a book together called”Elements of a Successful Therapeutic Business,” bringing together all they have learned from running their own businesses and teaching others.

In conjunction, Kate offers coaching sessions for practitioners utilizing her practice experience, therapeutic presence, and effective communication to support practitioners in discovering solutions to barriers that may be holding them back from reaching their full potential. Kate’s coaching services are designed to help her colleagues assess how to make business bloom and tackle the personal and professional issues that may be hindering them.

Based in Livermore, California, Kate works with clients and colleagues in person and virtually.
