Scarlett Lewis Honored with Women of Distinction Award
By Jan Pierret
The YWCA Darien/Norwalk selected Scarlett Lewis as a recipient for the 2018 Women of Distinction Awards. The award recognizes women who have made significant and unique contributions that have made a difference in the community. Scarlett is recognized for her work at Hindley School in Darien, CT and All Saints Catholic School in Norwalk, CT as well as the global impact she makes teaching students how to Choose Love through the Choose Love Enrichment Program.
“I am so honored to be recognized for my work in sharing Jesse’s message of love. The Choose Love Movement started at Jesse’s funeral when I spoke to those in attendance. I believed the whole tragedy began with an angry thought in the shooter’s head and the amazing thing to me is that an angry thought can be changed! I asked everyone that day to consciously change one angry thought into a loving thought each day,” said Lewis.
“Since that day, I decided to be part of the solution to the issues that we’re seeing in our society—and that also caused the tragedy at Sandy Hook. I became an advocate for social and emotional learning that teaches children how to manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy relationships. I have dedicated my life to making sure that all children have access to SEL through a program I created, the Choose Love Enrichment Program. This is a F-R-E-E comprehensive PreK-12th grade social and emotional learning program for schools plus a free home version for families,” continued Lewis.
Wistar Wallace, Board Member and Chair, YWCA Darien/Norwalk, stated “It is always an honor to be apart of an event that is empowering to women. The YWCA Darien/Norwalk Women of Distinction annual event reminds us that there are remarkable women doing extraordinary things, every day. The luncheon is a way to recognize and celebrate all of their hard and selfless works.”
The Women of Distinction Award and Luncheon will be held on May 10, 2018 at Woodway Country Club in Darien, CT. This event is open to the public. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased at www.ywcadn.org/WODtickets. For further inquiries about this event, please contact wod@ywcadn.org.
