Beyond Bullying Prevention: The Heroic Choice That Changes What Happens Next

Schools work hard to stop bullying. But what happens next matters, too.

  • How do we help a student who feels rejected or humiliated?
  • How do we reach a student whose pain is showing up as harmful behavior?
  • How do we help bystanders find the courage to act?

Social isolation, shame, low self-worth, anger, and the desire to get even can leave students feeling trapped in a cycle of hurt. In a U.S. Secret Service study of targeted K–12 school attacks, 28 of the 35 attackers with sufficient background information had experienced bullying. RAND research also found that bullying and cyberbullying remained educators’ leading school safety concerns.

Join Scarlett Lewis to explore how Choose Love for Schools helps the whole school community respond to hurt before it grows. Scarlett will share insights from her conversations with people who committed school violence, and introduce a simple practice that can help students who bully, students targeted by bullying, and those who witness it.

You’ll learn how to help students pause when their minds and bodies move into defense, recognize the urge to lash out or seek revenge, and make a Heroic Choice, a thoughtful response guided by courage, connection, and love. We’ll also explore how the Choose Love Formula helps students process painful emotions, seek support, take responsibility for their actions, and practice forgiveness without excusing harm.

Attendees will learn how to:
  • Recognize when rejection, shame, or anger may be driving a student’s behavior.
  • Help students pause when they feel the urge to lash out or seek revenge.
  • Teach the Heroic Choice: responding with courage, connection, and love.
  • Support students who bully, students targeted by bullying, and bystanders in taking constructive action.
  • Use the Choose Love Formula to help students seek support, take responsibility, and practice forgiveness without excusing harm.
For educators, school leaders, counselors, parents, social workers, and community leaders.
